Vanderbilt Football Opens Season with Historic Victory
Historic Victory for Vanderbilt Football
Vanderbilt University's football team made history on Saturday, August 26th, 2023, with a thrilling victory over the Alcorn State Braves. The Commodores, who have struggled in recent years, pulled off a stunning upset in front of a sold-out crowd at Vanderbilt Stadium.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading blows throughout the first half. Vanderbilt took an early lead, but Alcorn State fought back to tie the game at 14-14 going into halftime.
Second Half Surge
In the second half, Vanderbilt's offense exploded, scoring 21 unanswered points to take a commanding lead. Quarterback Mike Wright threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Ray Davis rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
The Commodores' defense also played a key role in the victory, forcing three turnovers and sacking Alcorn State's quarterback five times.
Historic Implications
Vanderbilt's victory over Alcorn State is the program's first season-opening win since 2018. It is also the first time the Commodores have defeated an FCS opponent since 2014.
The win has given Vanderbilt fans hope that the program is finally turning a corner under new head coach Clark Lea. Lea, who was hired in December 2020, has brought a new sense of energy and enthusiasm to the program.
Looking Ahead
Vanderbilt will look to build on its season-opening victory when they travel to face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on September 2nd. The Commodores will then return home to face Elon on September 9th before opening SEC play against Ole Miss on September 16th.
The Commodores have a tough schedule ahead of them, but they have shown that they are capable of competing with anyone. If they can continue to play with the same intensity and passion they showed against Alcorn State, they have a chance to make some noise in the SEC this season.
